Inspire Shell volunteers with Home of Guiding Hands

Updated: Aug 7, 2020

Inspire is a recently graduated Global Health and expects to attend graduate school in the Fall of 2020.

For two years, he volunteered with Home of Guiding Hands in San Diego, an organization which works with individuals that have a mental disorder or a mental disability. Inspire notes that many of Home of Guiding Hands’ clients have a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

While at Home of Guiding Hands, Inspire maintained confidentiality of records relating to client treatment, and collected information about clients through interviews, observation or tests. He also helped clients integrate back into society and made sure all scheduled clients made their doctor appointments.

Inspire remembers the most challenging aspect was knowing what was best for the client and not only allowing them to make mistakes but learn from them and move forward.

One of the most inspiring aspects of working with these clients was their ability to remain happy, regardless of the situation they were presented with.

“Many of my clients are dealing with very bad circumstances but they still find the time to smile”

Outside of his duties, Inspire would speak to clients about any pressing matters in their personal life and even discuss the different universities that they were interested in attending some day in the future.

Inspire notes that his coursework for the Global Health Program has helped him gain a better understanding of different cultures and have improved his ability to relate to his clients.

Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) was created as a result of a small, but dedicated and ambitious group of leaders in East County. Since its' inception, HGH has provided benchmark programming and housing for men, women, and children with developmental disabilities. HGH is one of the largest providers of supports and services in San Diego County, serving more than 3,800 infants, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities. We believe that individuals thrive where they can direct their own lives in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle, provides individualized attention, increased opportunities for self-sufficiency, and encourages greater community integration and access.
